If you have a built in method for displaying a “Page not found” or error page in your application or code but aren’t sending a 404 header, and you’re also using a broken link checking tool, you may find that you’ll get many valid results for pages that actually don’t exist.  The reason is that as far as the checker is concerned, the link went to a page.  Just send the following to the browser and you’ll be fine:

<?php header("HTTP/1.0 404 Not Found");?>
